This word, listed as Strongs H1882, is quite similar to the English word for death when uttered:

English is an erratic, non-pure language. It seems we've been mispronouncing sweat and death for decades!  For instance, you can tell if you've been mispronouncing death by inserting it with similar words:

beneath , heathen , sheath,   wreath , heath.... death?  Long e sound seems appropriate for death.

heat, meat , beat , treat,  neat , seat , pleat,  feat.... sweat?   Long e sound seems appropriate for sweat. 

laugh, cough, rough, tough, enough, trough  ....dough?  The f sound seems appropriate for dough.
